About Habitat for Humanity of Orange County

Habitat for Humanity of Orange County is a nonprofit organization that offers local low-income families the opportunity to purchase affordable homes. Since 1984, Habitat has built more than 250 homes and repaired more than 60 homes locally, and has funded more than 180 homes internationally. Habitat for Humanity of Orange County is the local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International.

Position Overview

The Communications Coordinator is a member of the Development Department. This is a full-time position, averaging 40 hours per week. The workweek is typically Monday to Friday. Work outside normal business hours, including weekends, is sometimes required for events and to accommodate volunteers and partners.

Under the supervision of the Director of Leadership Gifts, the Communications Coordinator will advance Habitat’s mission and organizational goals through communications and marketing activities. Activities will focus primarily on fundraising, but will also support all departments and organization functions.

The responsibilities of the Communications Coordinator include, but are not limited to:

Direct Mail and Annual Fund

  • Write and design fundraising appeals, newsletters, annual reports, holiday cards, thank you letters, and special mailings
  • In conjunction with Database and Grant Manager, coordinate printing and mailing of mass appeals and newsletters
  • Create content and design for e-newsletters, e-solicitations, and e-invitations

Website and Social Media

  • Regularly create and update content for the website
  • Use Google Analytics to track basic website usage and engagement statistics
  • Create daily content for Habitat’s Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts
  • Strengthen and expand Habitat’s virtual presence by developing, scheduling, and evaluating new media efforts
  • Monitor social media and news for posts about Habitat, housing, or other related topics

Events

  • Design and produce invitations, printed programs, and other event materials
  • Take photographs at events
  • Assist with events as requested

Media Relations

  • Work to maximize media coverage and enhance Habitat’s visibility in the community
  • Draft press materials including press releases and media advisories
  • Monitor print and TV media for interesting connections to Habitat
  • Maintain and update media contact list
  • Collect and maintain media clippings archive

General

  • Responsible for all communications and marketing materials and activities, such as brochures, displays, PowerPoint presentations, website, and audio and video products
  • Ensure that all messaging in communications and marketing materials is strategically aligned
  • Represent or coordinate representatives of Habitat at events and on camera as needed
  • Visit active construction sites to photograph volunteers and partners on at least a weekly basis
  • Create system of organization for maintaining photographs in an easily accessible way
  • Collaborate with the Habitat for Humanity ReStore to cross-promote events and relevant news
  • Represent Habitat with integrity and in a professional manner

Qualifications:

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral, which transcend diverse audiences
  • Exceptional story-teller and writer
  • Advanced working knowledge of Windows and Microsoft Office
  • Working knowledge of print, audio, and video production methods
  • Detail-oriented with strong planning skills
  • Initiative and independence in carrying out responsibilities
  • Excellent organization skills with an ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and a variety of demands
  • Strong self-motivation and the ability to work as a team member
  • Ability to work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds and promote a positive working environment and spirit of collaboration
  • A strong belief in the organization’s mission and vision

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a related field
  • Two years of relevant experience with communications, marketing, and/or graphic design
  • Experience in a nonprofit organization is highly desired
  • Familiarity with nonprofit organizations and fundraising techniques
