What is the “Hands for Habitat” Partnership?

The Hands for Habitat Partnership is engaging students in Orange County Schools in an ambitious service learning project designed to increase awareness of issues surrounding housing and affordability. During the 2009-2010 school year the project has three components:

Building: Construction classes from Orange High School are building a green-certified home in the Fairview Community of Hillsborough.

Curriculum: Classrooms at various grade levels throughout the district are engaged in educational and service learning activities designed by Habitat for Humanity International to focus on housing issues that affect our community and world.

Fundraising: Schools, classrooms and clubs have joined with community businesses and organizations to raise $35,000 to fund the construction of the home.

The Sports Endeavors Challenge
Sports Endeavors has challenged the students of Orange County schools to raise $10,000 for Hands for Habitat. Sports Endeavors will match, dollar for dollar, all gifts up to $10,000 resulting in a combined gift of $20,000 for the Hands for Habitat project.

4th grade teachers Autumn Williams, Tammy Russell, and Casey Nunnery lead the way for Hillsborough Elementary School by coordinating school wide fundraising events and focusing their 4th grade literacy unit on the theme of poverty.
