Home was very much on the mind of LouBrenda Duffy last year when she began working her sweat equity with Habitat.
I wanted to leave my children something from me. A home they can have. And I wanted to show them responsibility and how important it is to own your own home.
Becoming a homeowner of a Habitat home takes serious commitment and sacrifice. In addition to the financial planning we all must do, Habitat homeowners perform 350 hours of labor on the construction of their home and the homes of others. Not an easy thing to do when you are a working single mother. However, LouBrenda relished the experience.
I loved coming to the worksite. I never knew who I would meet, so many different people, the volunteers, my future neighbors, and my partnership [Sports Endeavors].
LouBrenda's home was the third Habitat home Sports Endeavors has sponsored. Sports Endeavors also offered her daughter Dynasty a part-time job while she attends community college. LouBrenda even enjoyed the hard work of sweat equity.
I liked learning each task and perfecting my skills. The whole experience went by very fast. Yes, it's hard work, but it is very rewarding.
LouBrenda will continue working with Habitat, this time as a volunteer, serving on the Board of Directors, and she has graciously offered her home as the location for Habitat for Humanity of Orange County's 10th annual house party fundraiser next year.
To every Habitat financial supporter and volunteer, I really appreciate what you do. You make it possible and affordable for others to own a home. Habitat is a blessing.
