Building Pride

Building Pride is an initiative that focuses on the unique housing issues faced by LGBTQIA+ and more specifically, TGNC (trans and gender nonconforming) people. As a housing organization that believes “everyone deserves a decent place to live,” we recognize our responsibility towards these issues. We are working in partnership with local organizations that support the LGBTQIA+ population so together we can participate in collective education, fundraising, Habitat site builds, and more – empowering us to use our platform to advocate for meaningful changes in housing access for LGBTQIA+ and TGNC people.

How It Began

As we increase the number of housing solutions within Orange County each year, we, as an affiliate, have made strides regarding the intentionality behind the households we are attempting to reach.  We made efforts to promote Black and Latinx homeownership within Orange County, trying to remove obstacles that would have previously made members of these communities ineligible to purchase a Habitat home. Where our outreach gap existed, however, was within the LGBTQIA+ community.

The Team Up Project provided the catalyst through which to begin this work.  In September 2022, the United We Stand Summit was held at the White House, which sought to counter the corrosive effects of hate-fueled violence on our democracy and put forward a shared vision for a more united America. Orange Habitat was selected for a pilot program and awarded a grant as one of 32 communities to support local projects through four organizations: Catholic Charities USA, Interfaith America, The YMCA, and Habitat for Humanity.

Stay tuned for upcoming volunteer build days and events as we look forward to continuing this work!
