Tithing is a biblical principle that calls on believers to return the first fruits of their bounty back to God. Habitat for Humanity encourages all United States affiliates to share resources across national borders to help meet the extreme need for housing globally, and work toward a goal of tithing 10 percent of unrestricted income. Habitat for Humanity of Orange County, NC has funded over 200 homes with over $1 million in tithe globally.

Our vision of “a world where everyone has a decent place to live” extends beyond Orange County. Habitat for Humanity of Orange County primarily partners with Habitat in Honduras, though has been part of service groups to Nepal, Guatemala, and Puerto Rico. The affiliate also supports various disaster relief initiatives globally and domestically, including most recently special efforts in Ukraine and hurricane relief in Western North Carolina.

In addition to funding, Orange Habitat also organizes Global Village trips to partner countries. In 2019, two Global Village Trips were led through our affiliate, one in January and one in June. Trips were paused during the COVID-19 pandemic and will resume in early 2025. Join our interest list to receive more information on upcoming opportunities.

Global Advocacy Campaign

Home Equals is a five-year global advocacy campaign dedicated to achieving policy change, at all levels, to ensure that people living in informal settlements have equitable access to adequate housing. Together, with partners, governments and communities, we can create lasting change so that people living in informal settlements have safe and secure homes.

Currently, the more than 1 billion people around the world living in informal settlements, such as slums or favelas, are not treated as equals — their homes often lack basic services, land tenure security and climate resilience. This isn’t fair, this isn’t right. It will take the power of communities coupled with policy change to ensure access to adequate housing for all.
