Farm to Table Dinner Party: $195,000 Raised for Orange Habitat

April 24, 2024

On Saturday, April 20, Orange Habitat hosted its fourth annual Farm to Table Dinner Party at Teer Farm in Chapel Hill. 250 supporters gathered under the Carolina Blue skies to raise over $195,000.

President and CEO Jennifer Player shared about Orange Habitat’s impact as we celebrate 40 years as an affiliate this year. Over the past 40 years, Habitat has partnered with nearly 350 first-time homebuyers in Orange County to build financial sufficiency. This includes more than 1,000 children who grew up in a stable home. These families – most of whom are people of color – also now own $36 million in wealth through the equity and appreciation of their homes. That is, on average, more than $100,000 per family.

We heard from future Weavers Grove homeowner Tabitha and her journey to being approved for a Habitat home after applying twice before. The previous no’s were just the wait for the right yes to come along for the perfect home in Chapel Hill, where her husband Jason is from and daughter will continue to go to school in.

The bad news is that our organization hasn’t worked itself out of existence just yet. Right now, the median home price in Chapel Hill is around $761,000, and the cost to build a Habitat home in Orange County has also increased 85% over the past 10 years. But we believe there is hope. Funds raised from this event will help us embark on the next 40 years to build more homes for people like Tabitha.

Special thank you to our returning sponsor Pinnacle Financial Partners. Pinnacle Financial Partners provides a full range of banking, investment, trust, mortgage and insurance products and services with two locations in Chapel Hill. We appreciate their continued support of Orange Habitat! Additional sponsors this year include Ram Realty Advisors, and South State Bank, and our in-kind sponsors Olmaz Jewelers, and Chapel Hill Media Group.
