Global Village: A week volunteering in Honduras
In January, 24 staff, board members, and volunteers from Orange County traveled to Yamaranguila, Honduras on a week-long Global Village volunteer trip. Habitat para la Humanidad Honduras is Orange Habitat’s longest standing international partner for funding and service trips.
Habitat for Humanity encourages all United States affiliates to share resources across national borders to help meet the extreme need for housing globally, and work toward a goal of tithing 10 percent of unrestricted income. In our 40 year history, Habitat for Humanity of Orange County, NC has funded over 350 homes with over $1.4 million in tithe globally.
The group spent the week in the remote village supporting two homes. Volunteer tasks included replacing dirt floors with concrete, stuccoing the exterior, and building a latrine. This work supported Habitat for Humanity International’s initiative to replace 100,000 dirt floors in Latin America and the Caribbean. Improving homes with these small and inexpensive changes have been shown to improve health conditions of children, creating healthier homes. The group also spent time participating in cultural activities, including visiting a local weaver, touring a chocolate shop, and eating lots of local cuisine,
“Our week-long Global Habitat trip to Honduras was about more than just improving homes, it was about building hope,” said volunteer Anna. “Working alongside two indigenous Lenca families to improve their living conditions taught us all the power of teamwork, compassion and the lasting impact of service.”
