November 16, 2023

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(November 16, 2023) – Bank of America today announced Haven House of Raleigh and Habitat for Humanity of Orange County as the 2023 Neighborhood Builders® awardees for their work advancing economic mobility and building up underserved neighborhoods in the Triangle. Through this multi-year grant funding and extensive leadership training for the nonprofits’ leadership, programs and services addressing various challenges for Triangle area youth and affordable housing in Orange County.

The Neighborhood Builders program is one of the largest philanthropic investments into nonprofit leadership development in the nation, providing comprehensive leadership training for an executive director and an emerging leader on topics ranging from increasing financial sustainability, human capital management and strategic storytelling, and the opportunity to join a national network of peer organizations. Each Builder is also awarded a $200,000 grant over two years.

“These nonprofits’ mission and programming are vital to solving social challenges, promoting economic advancement and helping to strengthen the vitality of our Triangle communities,” said Kari Stoltz, president, Bank of America Triangle. “Our goal for providing flexible funding and leadership training for both Orange Habitat and Haven House is to recognize them for creating real change and help position them for sustainable, long-term success.”

Haven House Services operates 10 programs that help more than 1,200 youth in need each year overcome their challenges and find a path to success. Whether they are experiencing homelessness, a crisis at home or school, or problems involving the juvenile justice system, Haven House helps youth identify their goals, connect with needed resources, and build skills needed for long-term success. This new grant funding will amplify the youth voice across the agency to shape both the delivery and design of programs, invest in additional training and leadership development opportunities for agency staff, and expand mental health services across the agency to fill a critical need for more mental health providers to help youth struggling with mental health challenges in the community.

“We are profoundly grateful to Bank of America for this generous award, a vital investment in our mission to ensure the safety, support, and success of vulnerable youth in our community,” said Michelle Zechmann, CEO of Haven House Services. “This substantial funding not only bolsters our efforts to enhance the wellbeing and economic prospects of youth facing homelessness and significant life challenges but also enables us to reinforce mental health services across all programs, embodying our commitment to compassion, integrity, and breaking down barriers for the diverse youth we serve, as we strive together to help every young person reach their full potential.”

Habitat for Humanity of Orange County partners with families to create better healthier, more financially stable lives through home ownership. Through the use of volunteer labor and donations of money and materials, Habitat builds homes for families in need. Bank of America’s partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Orange County is decades long. This latest recognition builds upon the previous grant support and volunteer efforts from the bank, including recent funding for Weavers Grove and sponsorship of previous CEO Builds. This grant funding will support Weavers Grove, a mixed-income community in Chapel Hill. Of the 238 homes, 102 are for Habitat homeowners, making Weavers Grove one of few developments in the nation that is setting a new precedent for mixed income living. The 102 Habitat homes will be owned by people who live or work in Orange County. The remaining market-rate homes will offer new opportunities for Chapel Hill homebuyers, at price ranges lower than today’s median home price.

“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Bank of America for their transformative grant toward building homes, communities, and hope with Orange Habitat,” said Jennifer Player, President and CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Orange County. “This generous grant will help us make homeownership a reality for 102 Habitat homebuyers who strengthen the fabric of the Chapel Hill community. Together, we are creating a community that embodies the spirit of unity and inclusivity for everyone.”

The invitation-only program is highly competitive. Nonprofits are selected by a committee comprised of community leaders and past Builders awardees. 13 nonprofits have been selected as Neighborhood Builders in the Triangle since 2016, with the bank investing $2.6 million into these local nonprofits.

Since 2004, Bank of America has invested more than $300 million in nearly 100 communities across the U.S., partnered with more than 1,600 nonprofits, and helped more than 3,000 nonprofit leaders strengthen their leadership skills through the Neighborhood Builders and Champions program.
