Heather has lived in Chapel Hill renting a two-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment with her 14 and 15-year-old sons off of Columbia Street for over ten years as she’s worked as a Bartender at Carolina Ale House. She loves being a bartender because of the community she has created with her customers.

Community is something Heather is most looking forward to her in new home; her future home at Gattis Court will only be a few streets over from her current home, allowing her to stay in the community her family already loves so much. This home is giving her the opportunity to own her own home while providing more space for her children.

Heather knew about Habitat long before she was searching for her own home; her family moved into a Habitat home in South Carolina when she was 8 years old. Her fondest memory of living in that home is what she is most looking forward to in her own Habitat home; a safe, stable community where kids are able to play together.

“I’m excited that it’s going to be my home and for my kids to have their own space. And that we get to stay in the Northside District,” said Heather. “My kids already love going to the Hargraves Center and in this new home, they will be even closer. This is such a small, tight-knit community where people are very rooted and connected to the community and we feel very loved and safe.”

One of her favorite things to do as a family is share a meal together and makes sure to spend dinnertime catching up with her children and hearing about their day. She’s even looking forward to hosting Thanksgiving at her home the first year she can move in. “I usually travel for the holidays and have to cook in other people’s homes. It’ll be so nice to host everyone in my own home and share that with family,” said Heather.
