NC Housing Day: Statewide Lobbying Efforts
On Wednesday, April 9th, Habitat staff, board members and homeowners joined more than 150 advocates at the North Carolina General Assembly in Raleigh for NC Housing Day 2025. The state lobby day was a coalition-based effort organized by the NC Housing Coalition, the NC Coalition to End Homelessness, and Habitat NC.
Participants held more than 100 meetings with state legislators urging them to make housing a priority in North Carolina. Habitat was able to meet with a lot of our local representatives, including Senator Graig Meyer, Representative Allen Buansi, & Representative Renee Price. Advocates shared information and discussed potential solutions with lawmakers to address the rising cost burden of property taxes on residents and the need for more state resources to build affordable housing. Even though communities across the state have different housing challenges, coming together on a state-wide level lifts up the need for affordable housing in North Carolina.
Housing affordability is a growing issue across the state, as home prices continue to rise dramatically statewide. According to the North Carolina Housing Coalition, 48% of renters and 19% of homeowners in North Carolina struggle to afford their housing.
