Tropical Storm Chantal: Recovery Efforts and Community Coming Together
When Tropical Storm Chantal swept through Orange County earlier this month, it left behind flooded homes, displaced residents, and a community in need. In the days since, we’ve witnessed something powerful: neighbors helping neighbors, volunteers stepping up, and partners showing incredible generosity.
At Habitat for Humanity, we are committed to helping those in need rebuild their lives and restore hope. In the days since, our staff have been out in the community. After checking in with Habitat homeowners, all of whose homes fared well, staff assisted in canvassing efforts to determine needs in the community in partnership with Mutual Aid. On Thursday, an off day for construction volunteers, staff and regular volunteers lent a hand to our Home Repair team to assist in flood-related repairs. Our Project Management team was even able to partner with the Chapel Hill Lowe’s Home Improvement store to receive donations of 20 dehumidifiers, fans, and PPE to be donated out to the community.
Now, as emergency response shifts into long-term recovery, Habitat is preparing to do what we do best – help people repair and rebuild their homes. Our team is already connecting with impacted households and reviewing home repair applications to identify where we’re needed most. If you were impacted by the floods and in need of assistance, you can contact us at email@orangehabitat.org with more information.
Thanks to the support of generous donors, over $4,000 has been raised for these specific recovery efforts. You can still make a donation to support this ongoing work at www.orangehabitat.org/give and mention FLOOD in the additional comments.
Thank you for standing with our community — before the storm, and after.
