Tropical Storm Chantal: Six Months of Recovery and Homecoming
When Tropical Storm Chantal swept through Orange County in July 2025, it left behind flooded homes, displaced residents, and a community in need. Now, six months later, some of those impacted by the storm are beginning to move back into their homes.
Orange Habitat was among the first organizations on the ground responding to homeowners in the Weatherhill Pointe neighborhood and Canterbury Townhomes in Carrboro. Since July, 10 homes have undergone extensive repairs, including water removal and drying, demolition and debris removal, mold remediation, and reconstruction—work essential to making homes safe and livable again.
This work has been made possible through the generosity of the community. During this fiscal year, nearly $300,000 has been raised from individual donors, companies, and foundations, allowing Orange Habitat to respond to this urgent, unbudgeted need while continuing to support typical home repair projects across the county.
For one homeowner who has since returned home, the damage caused by the storm initially felt overwhelming. “When the storm flooded the first floor of our townhouse, it seemed to present an insurmountable challenge. It became obvious how much a person depends on necessities that we often take for granted—water from the tap, plumbing, lighting and electricity, warmth and AC,” shared Elena.
In the days that followed, the homeowner experienced firsthand the power of community support. “It also quickly opened our eyes to the goodness and kindness of the people around us—neighbors, friends, and colleagues—who offered a helping hand, financially supported our recovery, and gave us hope during such a hard time.”
They credit Orange Habitat’s Home Repair Program with helping to make their return home possible. “From day one, Habitat for Humanity of Orange County provided invaluable help and support. We want to give a huge thank you to all of the work that the home repair team put into helping us get back on our feet and restore our house. So much effort was put into restoring our house to the home it was before the flood, making it even better. We are back in our home now. We’re feeling good, safe, happy and comfortable.”
While the immediate impacts of Tropical Storm Chantal may no longer be visible, the need for repair and recovery continues. Through its Home Repair Program, Orange Habitat remains committed to helping homeowners remain safely in their homes and rebuild after unexpected challenges.
