Volunteer Spotlight: Summer Careers Acadmey

July 16, 2025

With summer in full swing and school out, we’re seeing new types of youth groups on our construction site. Last month, we had the pleasure of hosting a group of young adults participating in the Summer Careers Academy.

This eight-week program helps local young people ages 16–24 gain real-world job experience and career exposure through paid internships with mission-driven organizations like Orange Habitat. Through this partnership, students explore careers in the trades and nonprofit sector, while Habitat benefits from their time, talent, and fresh perspective. It’s a win-win that builds more than homes—it builds confidence, skills, and community.

During their volunteer shift, these young adults took on a unique task: helping us move our carport! This structure serves as our volunteer check-in area, rest spot, and general hub for on-site activity. As we prepare to break ground on new homes, the carport needs to shift each year to keep up with progress. The SCA team jumped right in, helped us move it quickly, and then dove into learning construction tasks.

We’re grateful to the Summer Careers Academy for partnering with us to build a stronger community – and workforce – right here in Orange County.

Thank you, Summer Careers Academy, for your time and dedication to Habitat!
