Volunteer Spotlight: Veterans Build
This November, a handful of veterans joined over 80 Orange Habitat volunteers at the Weavers Grove construction site for our Veterans Day Build, where they helped with new home construction for future Habitat homeowners. While the Veterans Build program often focuses on our Home Preservation Program — which has supported 20 veterans over the past decade — this special build gave participants the chance to work on new homes while celebrating the strength and service of veterans and active-duty military members.
The build featured special guest speakers: Fred Black, a retired Army Colonel and Habitat volunteer and donor; Doug Call, a retired Navy Captain and dedicated supporter; and John Lyon, a Habitat homeowner and Navy veteran. Their stories inspired volunteers as they raised walls, installed siding, and shared in the spirit of service.
Habitat’s Veterans Build program focuses on homeownership, employment, community engagement, education, and honoring service. Days like this show the impact of coming together, not only to build homes but also to build connections, mentorship, and hope for veterans and their families.
We are grateful to everyone who participated, especially the veterans who joined us on site — your service continues to inspire, strengthen and sustain our community.
