Volunteers Needed: Help Us Build All Summer Long
In the Summer, two things are known to rise – outdoor temperatures and open volunteer slots! With many UNC students away and folks heading out on vacation, now is a great time to jump in and help on our construction site at Weavers Grove in Chapel Hill. Even in the heat, Habitat staff take extra precautions to ensure volunteers stay safe, hydrated, and have fun while building homes.
We recommend bringing a reusable water bottle and keeping it close—cold water coolers are available throughout the site, not just at check-in. Dress for the heat with light, breathable clothes, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunscreen for sun protection.
Breaks are encouraged all year long, but especially during the summer heat, to take as often and as long as you need. Staff are also First Aid certified and trained to recognize and treat the signs of Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke. If temperatures or the heat index rise too high, volunteer work for the day will be moved indoors or shifts will be canceled.
Prefer to stay indoors but still looking to volunteer? The ReStore is a great option with 10 locations in the greater Triangle area, including the Durham-Chapel Hill location off 15-501 and the Hillsborough location off US-70 and N Churton Street. At the ReStore, volunteers help organize merchandise, greet and thank donors, assist customers, and keep the store running smoothly Monday through Saturday.
