YES for Housing: Chapel Hill Affordable Housing Bond Passes

November 22, 2024

On November 5, voters made their voices heard by casting their ballots for candidates and bond referendums varying all across the county, state, and nation. In Chapel Hill, many important bonds, including $15 million for affordable housing, were on the ballot. Thank you to everyone who has helped us pass the Affordable Housing Bond here in Chapel Hill, with over 72% of the vote!

The housing bond funds will support affordable housing development that aligns with the Town’s Affordable Housing Plan and Investment Strategy, which may include creating additional affordable housing, preserving existing affordable housing, or acquiring property to be used for affordable housing. The projects may be town-led and/or built by trusted local nonprofit housing developers, which could include Habitat.

We are so proud of each and every volunteer who helped to educate voters about the bonds!

Additionally, the other $29 million in bond funding in Chapel Hill, which will support public facilities, streets and sidewalks, and greenways, along with the county wide $300 million schools bond passed.

Across the state, over $165M in housing bonds were on the ballot total in Chapel Hill, Charlotte, Cary, and Asheville. Chapel Hill had the largest margin of approval for the bond of all the cities included. These investments are vital for the state of affordable housing in North Carolina, and we hope that more towns and counties will continue to pass housing bonds or other initiatives towards investing in affordable housing.
