Gattis Court

Located in the Historic Northside Neighborhood, Gattis Court is in the heart of the community and within walking distance to the Hargraves Community Center. Construction on these four homes began in the Fall of 2022 and is expected to be complete in the Summer of 2024.

Northside is a historically working class, African- American community. Today, the neighborhood is among the most racially, ethnically, and economically diverse in the region. Many residents work or have retired from jobs that are critical to the fabric of our community at UNC, UNC Hospitals, local government or schools, and other businesses. Led by the residents, there has been a concerted public-private effort in recent years to preserve Northside’s history and prevent long-term neighbors’ displacement.

Habitat has a long history of building and supporting the Northside Neighborhood, building 24 single family homes and repairing over 50 homes. Much of the land Habitat has been able to build on has been acquired through the Northside Neighborhood Initiative, made up of UNC Chapel Hill, Self-Help, The Jackson Center, and the Town of Chapel Hill. This broad-based partnership effort controls the dirt in Northside, allows neighbors to determine the future of properties, and preserves the future of this diverse, family-friendly neighborhood.

Gattis Court is named after Estella (Stella) and William Gattis, a couple who built a house on what was then Schoolhouse Lane. They had three kids who grew up in the home, one of whom spent most of her life living in the Northside Neighborhood. Stella was a laundress for local families—taking their clothes home and washing/folding them while Willie worked for the sawmill and also served in the military until he was honorably discharged for an injury.

Meet a Homebuyer Heather

For more than 10 years, Heather has lived in Chapel Hill renting a two-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment with her teenage sons. Heather works as a Bartender at Carolina Ale House –job she loves because of the community she has created with her customers.

Community is something Heather is most looking forward to in her new home; she will be only a few streets over from her current home, allowing her to stay in the neighborhood her family already loves so much. With this new Habitat home, Heather has the opportunity to own her own home while providing more space for her children.
